Keeping it Simple - Righteousness
Read - Philippians 3:1-11
Review - Simply put, the characteristic of righteousness is “the quality of being morally right or justifiable”. Righteous and righteousness are used over 540 times in the Bible across Old and New Testaments so it must be important! Looking at “righteousness” through the eyes of the Christian faith, the key thing to note is that it is impossible for you to be truly righteous unless you have accepted Christ as your savior. To become righteous in the eyes of God is to choose Christ. Paul clearly states in Philippians 3:9-10 that his righteousness comes from Christ.
The law is good, and rules exist for a reason, but perfect righteousness only comes from Christ as the law is incomplete, imperfect, and influenced by the flesh. It can become a superficial crutch to rely on our own abilities to do what’s right. The fact is we are all sinners and will fall short of being truly righteous.
Romans 10:3-4 says, “For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”. Being obedient to the law and moral code isn’t enough to achieve righteousness. Surrendering to Christ is the only way to achieve righteousness and gives you perfect righteousness before God.
Reflect - Have I surrendered my heart to Jesus?
Remind - Philippians 3:9 – “and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—"
